Taylor, at Milepost 37, on the Alaska Highway,
sits on a plateau overlooking the Peace River and valley. The early settlers in
this region were trappers and farmers, but today Taylor relies on oil, gas,
lumber and pulp to keep the economy lively. Taylor on the Alaska Highway is only
60 km (37 mi.) north of Dawson Creek and 16 km (10 mi.) from Fort St John.
Incorporated in 1958, Taylor has a total area
of 16.61 sq km.
POPULATION
Taylor has
a population of
1,384 (2006 Census). According to BC Stats, the
population was estimated at 1,497 (in 2010).
TOP EMPLOYERS
MAJOR EMPLOYMENT AREAS
Duke Energy, Canfor Taylor Pulp, Taylor Natural Gas Liquids, North Peace Timber, and Fibreco’s pulp mill have together ensured that Taylor will remain
an industrial centre of the north. While these industries employ many people
living in Taylor, a large number of their employees commute to Taylor from
surrounding communities. At the same time, many residents of Taylor commute to
work in other communities such as Fort St John. The sectors employing the
majority of Taylor’s residents are transportation and communications, retail,
manufacturing, construction and accommodations, food and beverage service.
