Tumbler Ridge was incorporated in 1981.
This town was built to provide a home and community to the employees and
families who worked at two coal mines. Tumbler Ridge is located on Highway 27 South
(off Highway 97) 105 km (65 mi.) south of Chetwynd. By road it’s 120 km (74
mi.) to Dawson Creek.
There
have been significant gas finds around Tumbler Ridge and gas and oil
investments in the area are increasing. New coal mines have opened in
the area and there are several others in various stages of development.
POPULATION
Tumbler Ridge has
a population of
2,454 (2006 Census). According to BC Stats, the
population was estimated at 2,490 (in 2007).

MAJOR EMPLOYMENT AREAS
The Tumbler Ridge area is rich
in natural gas, coal and timber.
Recent natural gas finds to
the south, west and northeast of Tumbler Ridge and undeveloped coal
resources have significantly stimulated the local economy. New
exploration projects may include the Peace River Coal
projects at the Saxon and Belcourt properties, the Five Cabin property of
Murray River Coal. These projects are at various stages.
